Step 0 — Remove the dog from the bed first 🐾
Results vary. A treat works for most dogs. For 130 lb Newfoundlands in donut cones, gentle encouragement and patience is recommended. Moses is not on the bed but a lot of dogs are — and this is the most important step nobody puts in their guide.
The one thing that changes everything
Almost every guide tells you to start with two adjacent corners — top-left and top-right. That's exactly wrong for solo sheet-making. Start with two opposite corners instead — top-left and bottom-right. The sheet naturally centers itself on the mattress and nothing pops off while you do the remaining two. That's the whole secret.
The diagonal method — step by step
Six steps, no helper needed, no corners popping off.
Start at opposite corners — not adjacent
Drape the sheet loosely over the mattress so it's roughly centered. Find the top-left corner pocket and hook it over the top-left corner of the mattress. Now walk to the bottom-right corner — the opposite diagonal — and hook that one. Do not do top-left then top-right. Opposite corners first is what keeps everything centered.
Do the remaining two corners
With the first diagonal done the sheet is perfectly centered. Now hook the top-right corner, then the bottom-left corner. Because the sheet is already centered from the diagonal, these corners will hook on easily without pulling anything off. No assistant. No flapping. No drama.
Smooth from center outward
All four corners are on. Now smooth the sheet fabric from the center of the mattress outward toward each corner. This removes any bunching and ensures the sheet sits flat. Tuck any excess fabric under the mattress sides if needed.
The real game changer — an adjustable base
Here's what nobody talks about: the hardest part of solo sheet-making isn't technique — it's ergonomics. Bending over a low mattress, reaching across a king bed, contorting your back to tuck corners. An adjustable base lets you raise the bed to a comfortable working height so you're standing upright the whole time. For anyone with back pain, a bad shoulder, or who simply does laundry alone — this is the single most impactful upgrade you can make. Not just for sheets. For sleep, comfort, and your back for the next 20 years.
Tuck the sides and smooth as you go
Walk around the bed and tuck any overhanging fabric underneath the mattress on the long sides. Smooth the top surface as you go. If your sheet keeps bunching on the sides, it may be too shallow for your mattress — see the deep pocket note below.
Done — bed made, back intact
Sheet is on, corners are secure, surface is smooth. The whole thing should take under two minutes once the diagonal method is muscle memory. With an adjustable base you can do it standing upright without breaking a sweat — or a disc.
🛏️ The adjustable base we recommend
If you're still making your bed bent over a low frame, you're making laundry day harder than it needs to be. A quality adjustable base raises to working height, improves sleep quality, and pays for itself in back pain avoided. Saatva makes some of the best — luxury quality, white glove delivery, and they pair perfectly with their mattress lineup.

If your sheet keeps sliding off during the night — not during installation — your mattress is probably thicker than your sheet pockets. Standard sheets fit mattresses up to about 12 inches. If yours is deeper (especially with a topper or on an adjustable base) look for sheets labeled deep pocket (15"+) or extra deep pocket (18"+). Quality sheets with proper pocket depth stay on without any help.
Things that actually help
Diagonal first, always. Top-left then bottom-right. Or top-right then bottom-left. Either diagonal works — what matters is that you're doing opposite corners, not adjacent ones. This one change eliminates corner popping entirely.
Raise the bed if you can. An adjustable base at working height transforms solo bed-making from a chore into a 90-second task. If you have back pain, shoulder issues, or just hate bending over — this is the upgrade. Your future self will thank you.
Smooth as you go, not at the end. After each corner goes on, smooth the fabric toward the next corner before moving there. This prevents the bunching that makes the final smoothing take forever.
Fresh from the dryer is easiest. Slightly warm, slightly damp sheets from the dryer stretch more easily over corners and smooth flat better than cold stored sheets. Fold them right away and put them on right away — both tasks are easier warm.
Check your mattress depth before buying sheets. Measure from the top of the mattress to the floor clearance. If you have a pillow top, topper, or adjustable base, add those inches. Then buy sheets with pockets at least 2 inches deeper than that measurement.
Common questions
Why does my fitted sheet keep popping off while I put it on?
Almost always because you're doing adjacent corners first — top-left then top-right. This pulls the sheet toward one end and the tension pops the first corner off. Switch to the diagonal method (opposite corners first) and it won't happen.
Does an adjustable base really make that much difference?
Yes — especially for solo bed-making. The difference between making a bed bent over at 18 inches versus standing upright at 26-28 inches is enormous. If you've ever had back pain, shoulder surgery, or just found bed-making exhausting, an adjustable base is the fix. It's not just a luxury item — it's an ergonomic tool that makes daily tasks genuinely easier.
What's the difference between deep pocket and regular sheets?
Standard sheet pockets are about 9-12 inches deep, designed for traditional mattresses. Deep pocket sheets are 15+ inches, extra deep pocket are 18+. If your mattress is thick (memory foam, pillow top, or on an adjustable base with a topper) regular sheets won't reach around the corners. Deep pocket sheets solve this permanently without sheet straps or clips.
Do sheet straps or clips actually work?
They work as a bandage solution — if your sheets are slightly too small for your mattress they'll hold them down. But they don't fix the root problem (wrong sheet size) and they add friction to the bed-making process. Better to get the right sheets for your mattress depth and skip the extra hardware.
How do I get my dog off the bed before changing sheets?
Results may vary. A treat works for most dogs. For 130 lb Newfoundlands wearing donut cones, gentle encouragement and patience is recommended. Moses is not a bed dog but many are — building this step into your routine saves a lot of negotiation.
